Before you go

Connectivity

Use Telkomsel SIM cards for best coverage. Other providers may work for calls but internet access is extremely limited across Sumba.

Culture

When visiting traditional villages and beaches, expect to sign a guest book and make voluntary donations. The standard recommended amount is Rp20,000 per person. Visit the Sumba Cultural Center first to understand local culture before village visits.

Money

Most attractions operate on voluntary donation systems (around Rp20,000/person recommended). Carry small denomination bills for donations and avoid large bills for change. ATMs not mentioned—bring sufficient cash from larger cities.

Safety

Independent drivers at the airport may attempt to overcharge tourists. Get your accommodation to arrange pickup when possible, or use drivers recommended by your lodging. Always confirm pricing before accepting rides.

Transport

Transportation costs are high due to limited vehicles. Motorbike rental: Rp100,000-150,000/day, car with driver: Rp500,000-700,000/day. Airport to downtown: Rp50,000. Confirm all rates clearly to avoid being overcharged.
