Overview
Volgograd is a large industrial city stretching more than 60 km along the west bank of the Volga River. The city was formerly known as Stalingrad and remains known by that name on several war-related dates each year.

Metrotram provides light rail service; however, Google Maps transit directions are unreliable. Marshrutka schedules may be outdated.
History
Volgograd is synonymous with the Battle of Stalingrad. May 9 (Victory Day) and February 2 (Stalingrad Victory Day) are significant local holidays.
Language
Russian is the primary language. English is limited outside major hotels. Learning basic Russian phrases is recommended.
Transport
Bus 6 connects the city center (Komsomolskaya stop near Central Market) to the airport in about one hour. Buses 12, 35, and 95 serve Mamaev Kurgan.
Weather
Best visited April-May or September-October. Summers are hot with dust storms; winters are cold with temperatures dropping to -8°C.
