Vitória, the small and cozy capital of Espírito Santo, is nicknamed "Little Rio de Janeiro" for its beaches and culture without the capital's chaos. The city has around 320,000 residents (2022) and 1.88 million in its greater area, ranked by the UN as the fourth best place to live in Brazil. Its compact size makes it practical as a base for exploring the state, with most neighborhoods surrounded by parks and forests.

Get In

Eurico de Aguiar Salles Airport (VIX) receives daily flights from most Brazilian state capitals, primarily via Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, or Salvador. Main airlines include LATAM, Gol, Azul, TEAM, and TRIP. The airport is located near the north end of Camburi beach. Alternatively, train service connects Cariacica in the metropolitan region to Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, with departures daily at 7am arriving around 8:30pm (full trip costs around R$90).

Get Around

Vitoria has an extensive bus network, but cash payment is not accepted. You need a local "Cartão GV - Bilhete Único Metropolitano" transit card. If you have a CPF (Brazilian tax ID), you can get one at a pharmacy. Without a CPF, obtain one at Terminal Jardim América, opposite the train station.

When to Go

The humpback whale season runs from June to November when whales come to reproduce off the Capixaba coast. Summer months (December-March) bring beach parties and lively ambiance, especially in nearby Guarapari. The city hosts many cultural events throughout the year.

Vitória shares Brazil's common criminality challenges. Avoid entering poor hillside neighborhoods without a local companion. Do not walk empty streets at night; prefer taxis. Curva da Jurema area and outside Shopping Vitória at night have frequent bicycle muggers. Downtown area, especially near Vila Rubim, should be avoided alone.
