Overview
Višegrad is a small riverside town famous for the 1577 Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge spanning the Drina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town gained literary immortality through Ivo Andrić, who won the 1961 Nobel Prize for "The Bridge on the Drina," a novel set in the town.

History
Višegrad was devastated during the 1992-95 Bosnian War; the Vilina Vlas spa was the site of a notorious detention camp. The town has reconstructed much of its Ottoman-era character and honors Nobel laureate Ivo Andrić.
Money
Bosnia uses the Convertible Mark (KM/BAM). ATMs are available in town near banks. Credit cards accepted at larger hotels and some restaurants but cash is preferred for small purchases and markets.
Transport
Regional buses connect Višegrad to Sarajevo (4-5 hours), Foča, and onward to Serbia. The bus station is central. For Mokra Gora (Serbia), take the Užice bus and bring your passport for the border.
