Villaviciosa is a small Asturian coastal town (pop. 6,600) that served as a historic port and stopover on the northern pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.

Accommodation
Budget pilgrims can stay at Albergue El Congreso (dorms €14) or Albergue Villaviciosa (€17-23). Both are seasonal (March-October).
Culture
Villaviciosa is on the Camino del Norte pilgrimage route (E9 European long-distance path). The town has strong Holy Week traditions dating to 1668 and celebrates a cider/apple festival in October.
Food
Villaviciadosa cuisine centres on seafood, beef, and wild boar. Expect to pay €8-15 for a main dish at a sidreria. The town has a dozen traditional cider houses.
Money
Spain uses the euro (EUR). ATMs are available in town. Most restaurants and hotels accept cards but carry some cash for smaller establishments and markets.
Transport
ALSA buses run hourly between Villaviciosa and Gijón (30 min) and Oviedo (60 min). Taxis are available in town but you'll need a car to reach beaches and outlying churches.
Weather
Maritime climate with cool, wet weather common year-round. Summer months are mildest; spring and autumn offer less crowded visits with similar weather patterns.
