Why Go?

Oviedo is the capital of Asturias in northern Spain, with a population of 220,000 in 2024. It has a small but charming old town with monuments cited on the UNESCO World Heritage List, including four surviving pre-Romanesque buildings from the 9th century. The city makes a good base for exploring the Green Spain coast and mountains, and it's the starting point of the Camino Primitivo, the original route of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage.

Understand

Oviedo was settled from 761 AD, and although the Moors wrecked it in 794, they never ruled this far north. The Christian kingdom of Asturias evolved a unique pre-Romanesque architectural style, with fourteen examples surviving, four in Oviedo. The city enjoyed royal patronage through the 9th century when King Alfonso II established the first pilgrimage trail to Santiago. In 910 the court moved to León, and Oviedo became a backwater. It industrialised in the 19th-20th centuries, and its old town survived until 1934 when a miners' strike escalated into a precursor of the Spanish civil war.

Get In

Oviedo has a railway station and bus station as the main arrival points. The article does not specify international flight connections, but the city serves as a transit hub for northern Spain with regional train and bus services connecting to the coast and other Asturian towns.

Get Around

Walking is the best way to see the old centre, as streets are traffic-restricted. TUA bus lines (30 lines) serve the city with real-time displays at stops. The adult single fare is €1.20 in 2025, children under 4 travel free, and a book of ten tickets costs €3.60. Bicycle hire is available at Santana (San Pedro de Mestallón 4) and Carma Bike (Ángel Muñiz Toca 12), both M-Sa. Taxis wait at the bus station and central locations: Radio Taxi Ciudad de Oviedo (+34 985 250000) and Radio Taxi Principado (+34 985 252500) with €5 flagfall then €1/km.
