Overview

Villa Unión serves as the strategic base camp for visiting two of Argentina's most dramatic natural attractions: Talampaya National Park with its massive red canyons, and Ischigualasto National Park (Valle de la Luna) famous for its lunar-like landscapes. The town sits nestled among intensely red mountain ranges of Sierra de Famatina and Sierra de Maíz, surrounded by traditional local wineries.

Safety

Flash flooding possible during rainy season. Swimming prohibited at the dam. Zonda wind can cause discomfort. Standard urban precautions apply in this small town.

Transport

Villa Unión is accessed primarily by bus from La Rioja (multiple daily departures), Chilecito, and San Juan. The nearest airport is La Rioja (3km from center) with three weekly flights from Buenos Aires.

Weather

Hot and rainy summers (January-February wettest), dry and cold winters. Dramatic day-night temperature swings in this mountain desert climate. Zonda wind can exceed 40 km/h causing headaches.
