Vijayawada is the second largest city in Andhra Pradesh and its undisputed business capital, situated on the banks of the Krishna River and bounded by Indrakeeladri Hills. The city serves as a major transit hub with excellent railway and air connections, making it ideal for travelers heading to Amaravati (just 20 km away on the opposite bank of the Krishna). Visitors come for the Kanaka Durga Temple on Indrakeeladri hill, the panoramic Prakasam Barrage views, and the chance to sample authentic Andhra vegetarian thalis for as little as ₹30.

When to Go

Vijayawada experiences extreme summers with temperatures reaching up to 40.2°C in May. The monsoon season (June-September) brings heavy rainfall, with July receiving 207.7 mm. The best time to visit is October through March when temperatures range from 18-32°C and rainfall is moderate. The Dasara Festival (September-October) draws thousands of devotees to the Kanaka Durga Temple and Sri Nagarala Sri Maha Lakshmi Ammavaru Temple.

Getting In

Vijayawada is accessible by air via NTR Amaravati International Airport, located about 20 km east of the city. The airport has one integrated terminal, though international passengers must complete immigration procedures at a separate interim terminal before proceeding to the main building with a free shuttle. By rail, Vijayawada Junction is one of the biggest railway junctions in India, providing extensive train connections across the country.

Auto-rickshaws and APSRTC city buses serve as the primary local transport options in Vijayawada. Things to Do

Major attractions include the Kanaka Durga Temple on Indrakeeladri hill overlooking the Krishna River, accessible by ghat road or foot steps, and the Mogalarajapuram Caves dating to the 5th century AD—the first of their kind in South India. Gandhi Hill features the country's first Gandhi Memorial with seven stupas at 500 ft height, plus a toy train, planetarium, and Sound and Light Show. Prakasam Barrage creates a panoramic lake with three canals giving Vijayawada a Venetian appearance. Bhavani Island on Krishna River offers cottages and adventure sports, reachable by pleasant boat journey. Kondapalli Fort, built by King Krishna Deva Raya on a hill, features a three-storeyed rock tower.

Amaravati, the capital of Andhra Pradesh, lies just across the Krishna River from Vijayawada and is easily reachable via Prakasam Barrage. The Buddhist heritage sites of Amaravati, including the famous Amaravati Stupa, make for excellent day trips. Kondapalli Fort is another nearby option, about 20 km from the city, offering historical exploration of a fort built by Krishna Deva Raya.
