Rajahmundry (officially Rajamahendravaram) is Andhra Pradesh's cultural capital, founded in the 11th century by Raja Raja Narendra. The city sits on the Godavari River and is known as Southern Bombay for its commercial importance to the Godavari Districts. It is the birthplace of Nannayya, the first Telugu poet, making it significant for Telugu language and culture.

Climate
The climate is hot and humid tropical with mean maximum temperatures of 36°C. The hottest season runs April-June with temperatures ranging 34-48°C (maximum 51°C recorded in May 2007). The coolest months are December-January at pleasant 27-30°C. Heavy monsoon rains and cyclonic storms from the Bay of Bengal bring significant rainfall from June through October.

When to go
The best time to visit is November through February when temperatures are comfortable (27-30°C) and rainfall is minimal. Avoid April-June when temperatures can exceed 45°C. The monsoon season (June-October) brings heavy rains and cyclonic storm risks.

Get in
Rajahmundry Airport (IATA: RJA) is 12 km from the city center at Madhurapudi, with flights primarily from Hyderabad and some from Chennai. Prepaid cabs are available at the airport. The railway station sits almost at the city's center on the Howrah-Chennai main line; it is 150 km (2.5 hours) from Vijayawada and 220 km (3.5 hours) from Visakhapatnam which has international flights.

Get around
Auto-rickshaws and cycle rickshaws are the most common local transport for short distances. City buses operated by APSRTC connect various parts of the city. Prepaid autorickshaws are available near the railway station.

Accommodation ranges from budget guesthouses near the railway station to mid-range hotels.
