Overview
Vermilion Cliffs National Monument is a remote, unspoiled 280,000-acre wilderness with spectacular views of vermilion-colored cliffs rising from the sparse desert floor. The monument is home to an increasing number of California condors and other raptors, offering one of the best opportunities in the Southwest to view these massive birds.

Connectivity
No cell service or WiFi in wilderness areas; download offline maps before visiting. Time zone may shift near Navajo Nation border.
Money
No ATMs in the monument; carry cash for camping fees at some sites. Credit cards accepted at lodges.
Packing
Carry extra water, food, fuel, and a paper map. Gas and supplies only at Marble Canyon Lodge area.
Permit
The Wave requires advance lottery permit ($7); Coyote Buttes South ($5) and Paria Canyon ($6) also require permits.
Safety
Flash flood danger in slot canyons during monsoon season (July-August); no emergency services available in backcountry.
Transport
High-clearance 4WD required for backcountry; US 89A is the main access road crossing at Navajo Bridge. No public transportation exists within the monument.
Weather
Summer monsoon brings lightning and flash floods; best visiting seasons are spring and fall with moderate temperatures.
