Why go?

The Grand Canyon is one of the seven natural wonders of the world, a massive canyon carved by the Colorado River in northern Arizona. It encompasses several distinct areas: the more accessible South Rim, the remote North Rim, Phantom Ranch at the bottom, and sections on Indian reservations. The national park, especially the South Rim, is the most popular destination, offering stunning viewpoints and a wide range of outdoor activities.

Entrance fees for the national park are $20 for individuals on foot or bike, $30 for motorcycles, $35 for private vehicles, valid for seven days. The Grand Canyon National Park Annual Pass is $70.

When to go

Temperatures vary greatly by location: the North Rim is 20–30°F cooler than the river. Summer can be extremely hot at the canyon floor, with temperatures exceeding 120°F, while the rims are cooler. July and August are monsoon season with strong thunderstorms and flash floods. Snow falls on the rims in winter, and the North Rim closes during winter. Spring and fall offer pleasant conditions.

Things to do

Hiking is the main attraction, with trails like Bright Angel, South Kaibab, North Kaibab, Hermit, and Grandview. Multi-day whitewater rafting trips on the Colorado River are offered by several companies. Air tours and helicopter rides provide aerial views. Mule rides (200 lb weight limit) require advance booking. Ranger programs, star gazing (Grand Canyon Star Party in June), bicycling on park roads, educational courses through the Grand Canyon Field Institute, and motorcoach tours are available.

Budget

A daily backpacker budget might include $35 entrance fee (valid 7 days, shared), camping from $6–18 per night, meals $1–30, and free activities like hiking and viewpoints. Lodging in the park starts at $90 for basic rooms. Whitewater rafting tours are expensive (multi-day packages).
