Overview
Veliky Ustyug is an ancient merchant city at the confluence of the Sukhona and Yug rivers in Vologda Oblast, famous as the home of Ded Moroz (Russian Santa Claus). The city preserved its exceptional 18th-century northern Baroque ecclesiastical architecture when much of Russia was destroyed during Soviet times.

Veliky Ustyug preserves 18th-century northern Baroque Orthodox architecture. The town was historically significant as a route for conquest and development of the Komi-Perm lands, Urals, and Siberia.

Season
Winter (December-February) brings heavy Russian tourist traffic for Ded Moroz activities. Summer is better for sightseeing the architecture and exploring northern nature.

Local buses cost RUB 22 (2018), paid directly to the driver. Route 1 connects the bus station through the city center.
