Why go?
Uzunköprü is a working Turkish borderland town where the real attraction is the Long Bridge, a 1.3 km Ottoman stone structure built between 1426-1443 that still carries traffic. The town makes a practical stop on the Istanbul-Edirne route, with a handful of historic monuments, a Friday market, and local köfte specialties. It's not a destination for sightseeing tourists but offers an authentic glimpse of rural Eastern Thrace without tourist prices.
Understand
The town grew up around the Long Bridge (Uzun Köprü), which Sultan Murad II had built to carry the highway from Istanbul to Edirne across the Ergene valley. The valley's wide flood-prone rivers made wooden bridges impractical, so this 1239 m stone structure took two attempts over 20 years to complete. Uzunköprü's position on a trade route attracted a diverse mercantile population, but it also meant borderland status - occupied by Russia in 1829 and 1878/79, by Bulgaria in 1912/13, and by Greece in 1920/22. The 1923 population exchanges deported the Greek and other minority populations. Today the area is fertile agricultural lowland producing wheat, barley, sunflower oil, rice, and dairy.
Getting in
Uzunköprü is on the D100/E87 highway between Istanbul and Edirne, about 220 km from Istanbul and 55 km from Edirne. The TCDD train from Istanbul's Halkalı station takes about 4 hours via Pehlivanköy, arriving at the railway station 500 m south of the bus station. Buses from Istanbul run 3-4 hours, typically stopping in Uzunköprü on the way to Edirne. There's no direct border crossing to Greece 6 km west - you must go via Ipsala or through Edirne.
Get around
The town sprawls but the sights of interest are in a small walkable area around the bridge. The main street (Gazi Cd) leads to the bridge, with Cumhuriyet Cd the northbound parallel. Local dolmuş minibuses connect to surrounding villages. Taxis are available but not metered - agree on a price before departing.
When to go
The best time is spring (April-June) or autumn (September-October) when temperatures are mild. Summers can be hot (30-35°C) and winters cold with occasional flooding of the Ergene valley. November 18 marks the town's independence day from Greek occupation in 1922 - expect local celebrations if visiting then. The Friday market is a weekly highlight.
Where to stay
Accommodation options are limited. The Shook Hotel (formerly Çakıcı) on İnönü Cd by the riverfront is the main viable option, offering B&B doubles at 500 TL with free wi-fi, satellite TV, and air-con. The Gunes Otel is described as tatty, and the Ergene Otel has closed. There's no hostel or budget guesthouse in town. If Uzunköprü is full, base yourself in Edirne 55 km north and do a day trip.
Food and drink
Local specialties include Uzunköprü köftesi (local meatballs) and Ciğer (pepper-heavy liver dish). Gazi Cd towards the bridge has multiple lokantası and kebab shops: Garaj Lokantası, Uzunköprü Köftecisi, Damla Tava Ciğer, Köfteci Sebo, Öz Seçkin Pide Kebap, Üçler Kebap Salonu, and Cumaoğlu Kebap Pide Lahmacun. Towards Hayrabolu Cd (east bridge street) try Ravalı Ekmek Fırını, Köfteci Savaş, Köfteci Aydın, Kofteci Niyazi, and Adıbar Restoran. Turkish rakı is widely available - production has moved from nearby Tekirdağ to Manisa near Izmir. A cafe strip along Anabacı Cd was closed in 2021.
Things to do
The Long Bridge (Uzun Köprü) is the main attraction - walk its 1239 m length with 172 arches, watching for traffic as pavements are narrow. Look for the carved parapets from the track beside the factory near the north end. The Freedom Monument (Özgürlük Anıtı) at the bridge's town entrance celebrates the 1908 end of Ottoman absolute monarchy. The Telli Fountain in the cobbled square 100 m southeast dates from the 1720s, though its inscriptions were erased by Greek occupiers in 1920. St John the Baptist Church (Aziz İoannis Kilisesi) on Gazi Mahmut Sk was built in 1875, restored in 2011 as a cultural centre, open M-Sa 09:00-20:00. The City Museum (Kent Müzesi) at Tekel Sk 12 was closed in 2021 - check locally before visiting. Football matches are amateur-level only.
Buy
Migros supermarket opposite the Shook Hotel is open daily 09:00-22:00. The weekly market is held on Friday on the plaza at the south end of the bridge. Banks with ATMs line the main street for cash needs. Local agricultural products (flour, sunflower oil, rice, dairy) are available but oriented for domestic market rather than souvenir hunters.
Safety
Uzunköprü is a quiet provincial town with minimal crime targeting travelers. The main hazard is the busy Long Bridge with narrow pavements - walk facing oncoming traffic. The Ergene river is polluted, so don't swim or paddle. At night, standard urban caution applies in less-traveled areas.
Connectivity
4G mobile coverage is available from all Turkish carriers (Turkcell, Vodafone, Türk Telekom). As of February 2021, 5G has not reached this area. The Shook Hotel offers free wi-fi. Most cafes have wi-fi but quality varies.
Go next
Edirne (55 km north) is a beautiful historic city with Selimiye Mosque, the old palace, and a covered bazaar - allow at least half a day. On the way, stop at Havsa to see the small mosque and bazaar designed by master architect Sinan in the 16th century. Keşan (55 km south) is a transport hub with connections to Enez on the Gulf of Saros, the Gallipoli peninsula, and Çanakkale (gateway to Troy and the Dardanelles). Greece is only 6 km west but has no local border crossing - use Ipsala or go north through Edirne. Bulgaria is accessible via Edirne; for the Black Sea coast, route through Kırklareli.
