Why Go
Tozeur is a unique Saharan city in Tunisia distinguished by its remarkable architecture built from sand and clay bricks, featuring intricate geometric designs including triangular patterns believed to bring good luck. The city serves as the gateway to the Tunisian desert and hosts Star Wars filming locations from Mos Espa and Mos Eisley scenes. Local women wear distinctive black robes with bright blue bands, differentiating Tozeur from nearby Nefta where white bands are worn. The surrounding palm groves and mountain oases offer excellent trekking opportunities in a culturally rich setting.

Get Around
Taxis in Tozeur are unmetered, requiring negotiation of the fare before departure; short trips of about a kilometer cost around 2 DT. Horse-drawn carriages offer a tourist-oriented experience, with parking near Residence Karim and the hospital in the south. Bicycle rental is popular for exploring the extensive palmeraie—test rides are recommended and haggling at multiple rental shops is advised as you may not be offered the best bicycles initially. Car rental agencies include Avis (Avenue Farhat Hatched, 76-452-377), Olympic rent car (Route touristique, 98-235-345), and Galaxy rent car (Avenue Chebbi, 93-444-555); these agencies often lack online booking so calling ahead is recommended, or your hotel can assist.

When To Go
The palm groves are best visited in early morning or late evening to avoid extreme heat. In October, locals from across the region gather to help with plantation work, offering visitors a chance to witness traditional agricultural practices. Summer months see dried-up watering holes at Belvedere Rocks, while winter brings pools around the area. The desert climate means very hot summers and mild winters.

Things To Do
The Star Wars film set (Mos Espa/Mos Eisley) offers half-day tours from local guides at standard rates. The compact Medina (Ouled el Hadef) rewards exploration with beautiful sand-brick architecture, triangular lucky designs, palm-wood and apricot-wood tunnel roofs, traditional jalousie peeping windows, and distinctive squared doors featuring nail designs including palm jars, Jewish stars, and bicycle motifs. The Palmerie, one of Tunisia's largest palm groves, is best explored by GPS or foot on main roads past friendly residents and shy watchdogs. Nearby day trips include Chebika (cliff-edge oasis with natural pools, guides expect ~10 DT for 30 minutes), the Mides gorge (4.5 km hike to Tamerza, guides 40-50 DT total), and Tamerza with natural swimming pools and waterfalls. Camel tours are available through operators like Amara Themri (+216 97280133). Traditional hammams accommodate men and women at separate times; Hammam Shabia near Hotel/Residence El-Amen charges 2-3 DT plus 2-4 DT for massage (tourist tax may raise total to ~8 DT).

Douz lies to the south and is accessible by road crossing the impressive Chott el-Jerid salt lake—a raised causeway passes over the dry lake bed which is photogenic with white salt sand. Gabes, another gateway city, offers access to the southern Tunisian coast. The road to Douz provides views of the white salt formations gathered and exported by Tunisia.
