Overview
Tjoritja / West MacDonnell National Park showcases the dramatic red-ridge landscape of the MacDonnell Ranges, with spectacular gorges, permanent waterholes, and ancient Aboriginal sacred sites. The park offers world-class desert trekking along the Larapinta Trail, swimming in ice-cold natural pools like Ellery Creek Big Hole, and encounters with Indigenous Australian culture at Hermannsburg.

Before you go
Packing
Bring all food, water, and supplies from Alice Springs—facilities are extremely limited. Carry at least 4 liters of water per person for day hikes.
Safety
Swim only where signs permit, never alone, and watch for hypothermia symptoms even in summer. Remote areas have no mobile phone coverage or emergency services.
Transport
Private vehicle is essential. Sealed roads (Larapinta Drive, Namatjira Drive) suit 2WD; western 4WD tracks require permits for Redbank, Roma Gorges, Haast's Bluff, Tyler's Pass, and Gosse Bluff.
Weather
Visit May-September for comfortable temperatures (20-25°C). Summer heat exceeds 40°C and makes hiking dangerous. Winter nights drop below freezing.
