Overview
Timgad is a UNESCO World Heritage Site containing the exceptionally well-preserved ruins of a Roman city founded by Emperor Trajan in 100 AD. The site is remarkable for its orthogonal grid plan, designed for 15,000 inhabitants but quickly outgrowing its original specifications.

Mobile phone coverage is available in Timgad. WiFi is likely limited to hotels. International roaming for Algerian networks may be expensive.

Arabic and French are the primary languages. English is limited; basic French phrases are helpful. Some guides speak a little English.

Algerian Dinar (DZD) is the local currency. Cash is preferred for most transactions. ATM availability in Timgad may be limited, so withdraw funds in Batna before visiting.
Safety
Timgad is generally safe for visitors. Standard precautions apply. The ruins are well-maintained by site managers. Inform accommodation staff of your plans when visiting remote areas of the site.
Transport
Timgad is accessible via RN 87 road. Public buses and shared taxis connect from Batna. The town is walkable and the ruins are explored on foot.
Weather
Best visited in spring or autumn. Summer can be extremely hot; winter may be cold at the 1,000m elevation. Early morning visits recommended to avoid heat.
