Why go?
Thalassery (also spelled Tellicherry) is the political and cultural capital of Malabar in northern Kerala. During the colonial era, it was the centre of learning in north Kerala—the first Malayalam newspapers, novels, and short stories were born here. The city is famous as the birthplace of the Indian circus, with Keeleri Kunhikannan celebrated as the father of Kerala Circus, and India's premier Circus Academy now calls Thalassery home. Thalassery's composite cosmopolitan culture reflects Arabian, Dutch, British, and Portuguese influences, making it a compelling destination for history buffs and culture seekers.

Understand
Thalassery is sometimes called the city of cricket, cakes, and circuses—India's first cricket club was formed here in 1850, and the Tellichery Cricket ground was the hub of cricket activities during British rule. The city is famous for its unique cuisine, particularly Thalassery biryani, which has a distinguishing taste influenced by Arabian culture. Traditional Kerala architecture dominates the older houses—large structures with wide verandas, solid wooden doors, and coconut, jackfruit, papaya, and mango trees. Many residents have family members living overseas or in other Indian states, creating a money-order economy.
