Overview
Tefé is the last outpost of civilization before the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve, one of the world's largest flooded forests and a UNESCO-recognized sustainable development model. The town sits on a lake formed by the Tefé River meeting the Solimões River (upper Amazon), offering access to extraordinary biodiversity, indigenous communities, and ecological research stations.

Before you go
Connectivity
4G cellular coverage in town center from Brazilian carriers. WiFi limited to restaurants and hotels with slow speeds typical of remote locations. Download offline content before arriving.
Etiquette
Tefé is a traditional Amazonian town—dress modestly in the central area. When visiting Mamirauá communities, ask permission before photographing residents. Tipping is appreciated but not obligatory.
Health
Malaria prophylaxis recommended for Mamirauá Reserve trips. Dengue is present year-round. Bring basic medications as pharmacy selection is limited. Avoid swimming near boat docks.
Money
Brazilian Real (BRL) is the currency. ATMs exist but may run out of cash on weekends. Carry sufficient funds for your stay, as Tefé is remote and resupply is slow.
Transport
No roads lead to Tefé—arrivals are exclusively by plane from Manaus (50 min) or river boats (12 hr to 3 days). Mototaxis serve local transport within town for around R$3.00.
Weather
High-water season runs December-May, making Mamirauá excursions more accessible but river transport more hazardous. Low season (June-November) offers easier land-based exploration but some areas become inaccessible.
