Overview
Tatra National Park (Tatranský Národný Park, or TANAP) contains the highest mountain ranges in Slovakia, with peaks exceeding 2,500 meters. The High Tatras offer dramatic alpine scenery, glacial lakes, and well-marked hiking trails without requiring technical climbing skills.

Mobile signal exists only in popular valleys facing cities; inner valleys have no signal for hours of walking.
Fees
Most hiking is free. Guided climbs to peaks like Gerlachovský Štít cost €420-510 for small groups through licensed guides.
Safety
Multiple fatalities occur annually. Always tell someone your plans, carry emergency gear, and expect rapid weather changes even in summer.
Season
Main hiking season is mid-June to end of October. Many trails are closed outside this period.
Transport
Train and bus connect Štrbské Pleso and Starý Smokovec to Bratislava and Košice. Car rental recommended for accessing remote trailheads.
