Before you go
Connectivity
Mobile coverage is limited in deep valleys and on higher peaks. Mountain refuges may have WiFi but cannot be relied upon. Consider offline maps.
Money
Park entry tickets cost 10 zł standard, 5 zł reduced (students, children under 7, disabled, pensioners). Seven-day tickets are 50 zł. Parking is 36 zł for cars. Mountain refuge stays range 37-125 zł per person.
Packing
Essential: waterproof layers, sturdy hiking boots with ankle support, first aid kit, map or GPS, sufficient water and food. Trekking poles recommended for steep sections.
Safety
Mountain weather changes suddenly with summer thunderstorms and winter avalanches. Ice persists on northern slopes until June. Wear proper hiking boots; flip-flops cause many rescues. Large mammals present but rarely aggressive if you stay noisy.
Transport
No public transport operates within the park. Zakopane is the main access town with bus connections from Kraków. Expect heavy traffic approaching the park on weekends and holidays.
Weather
Valley temperatures average 15°C summer, -5°C winter. Mountain peaks are 10°C colder than valleys with double the rainfall. Pack layers and rain gear year-round.
