Overview
Takachiho is a mountain town in Miyazaki prefecture that few foreigners visit despite drawing over a million Japanese tourists annually. The town centers on Takachiho Gorge, an impressive ravine carved by the Gokase River with countless waterfalls cascading into it, and Ama-no-Iwato Shrine, the sacred cave where the sun goddess Amaterasu hid according to Shinto mythology.
