Overview
Svoboda exists almost entirely to serve the Kursk Root Hermitage (Коренная пустынь), one of the most celebrated monasteries of Russia's Black Earth region. Founded in 1597 at the site where the miraculous Kursk Root Icon was discovered in tree roots, the monastery draws Orthodox pilgrims who participate in the annual procession on the 9th Friday after Easter.
