Overview

Sur offers one of the world's few remaining places where traditional wooden dhows are built by hand using centuries-old techniques. The city was founded in the 6th century CE as a trading port and retains its maritime heritage while offering Omani architecture, coastal promenades, and convenient access to natural wonders like Wadi Shab and Ras al-Jinz turtle reserve.

Sur is a traditional Omani city. Dress modestly, especially at religious sites and in residential areas. The dhow shipyard is still operational—observe respectfully.

Arabic is the local language. English is widely understood in hotels, restaurants, and tourist sites. Indian expatriate workers often speak Malayalam or Tamil.

Oman's currency is the Omani Rial (RO). Prices in Sur are quoted in RO or Bzs (baisa, 1000 Bzs = 1 RO). Major credit cards accepted at hotels and larger restaurants.

Transport

Sur has no airport—Muscat International is the nearest. Taxis within Sur cost a flat 150 Bzs. Mwasalat buses run to Muscat daily (4h15m).

Best visited November-March (17-28°C). Summer temperatures exceed 40°C. September is typically the driest month with near-zero rainfall.
