Why go?
St Albans offers a compelling blend of Roman, medieval, and Georgian heritage just 20 minutes by train from London. The city自豪地拥有英国最长的 cathedral nave (84米),以及保存完好的罗马遗迹,包括罗马剧院、博物馆和地下供暖系统。 Unlike typical commuter suburbs, St Albans rewards visitors with centuries of layered history, from Boudicca's burning of Roman Verulamium to its medieval monastic prominence. The city center is walkable, the pubs are plentiful (highest density in England), and the famous Alban Bun has been distributed since 1361.

Understand
St Albans began in the Iron Age as the Catuvellauni settlement of Verlamio, renamed by the Romans as Verulamium. The rebellious Iceni princess Boudicca burned it to the ground during her rebellion, but it was quickly rebuilt. Ruins of the Roman wall, theatre, and hypocaust can still be visited today. Alban, a resident of Verulamium, became Britain's first Christian martyr, giving the city its name and establishing an important abbey and monastic centre in the Middle Ages. Queen Victoria bestowed city status in 1877. Today St Albans functions as a prosperous commuter suburb for London workers.

The area around St Albans City Station can be busy on weekday mornings with commuters. Verulamium Park is safe during daylight hours, though walking through less-trafficked areas after dark warrants standard caution.
