Overview
The Ssese Islands offer a remote island escape in Lake Victoria without the crowds of more developed destinations. With 43 inhabited islands spanning from tiny plots to the 40 km-long Buggala Island, the archipelago provides beaches, birdwatching, cycling routes, and a relaxed atmosphere.

Before you go
Accommodation
Most options are in Kalangala Bay on Buggala Island. Budget guesthouses on Bukasa Island charge around US$4 but require self-catering.
Language
Luganda is the local language. Outside Kalangala Bay, locals may not speak English—learning basic Luganda phrases helps.
Money
Local currency is Ugandan Shilling (USh). Basic guesthouses cost US$4-10, mid-range full-board hotels US$70-110. Carry cash as card facilities are limited.
Safety
Critical warnings: no swimming in Lake Victoria (Bilharzia risk), crocodiles are common, ferry service can be unreliable and dangerous in storms, and AIDS rates are extremely high in fishing villages.
Transport
Two ferry routes serve Buggala Island from mainland Uganda: Nakiwogo (near Entebbe) and Bukakata (near Masaka). Lake taxis connect smaller islands but schedules are unreliable.
