Why Go

Southampton is the largest city in Hampshire, a busy cruise ship and container port on England's south coast. In 1912 it was the point of departure for the RMS Titanic, and today it remains the European end of the last transatlantic ocean liner route—the Queen Mary II to New York. The city has grown rapidly around its maritime heritage, with two universities (Solent University and University of Southampton) giving it a youthful energy alongside its historic roots dating back to Roman and Saxon times.

Getting In

Southampton is well-connected by rail with Southampton Central station, and Southampton Airport offers flights to UK and European destinations. The city is also a major cruise port. By road, the M3 provides access from London to the north, while the M27 runs east-west along the coast connecting Portsmouth and Bournemouth. National Express coaches serve the city from various UK destinations.

Food and Drink

There are two main dining areas: Oxford Street near Ocean Village and Bedford Place north of the centre. Bedford Place offers diverse options from Moroccan and Mexican to Indian curry houses and late-night kebab shops, with Pride of India consistently rated as one of the city's best Indians. Near Mayflower Theatre, Buon Gusto (Italian) and Cafe Pattaya (Thai) are particularly recommended. The city has two pubs dating from Tudor times, with the Red Lion in High Street steeped in history. Portswood is the student drinking area, home to The Hobbit pub and The Brook for live music. The Shooting Star is a relaxed jazz bar with live music every Friday night.
