Overview

Sonargaon is one of the oldest capitals of Bengal, serving as the seat of the Hindu Deva Dynasty in the mid-13th century before becoming a subsidiary capital of the Sultanate of Bengal. Today, it offers a peaceful escape from Dhaka with crumbling mansions of Panam City, centuries-old Sufi shrines, and the excellent Folk-Art and Crafts Museum.

Before you go

Connectivity

Mobile coverage is available but limited in rural areas. WiFi is not commonly available in Sonargaon itself. Dhaka-based SIM cards work but signal may be weak in villages.

Culture

Dress modestly when visiting mosques and shrines. Remove shoes before entering religious sites. Be respectful at Sufi shrines and tombs.

Money

Prices are given in Bangladeshi Taka (BDT/Tk). Basic meals near the bus stand are affordable. The main attraction (Sadarbari museum) costs Tk 100 entry.

Transport

Buses from Dhaka's Gulistan bus stand cost Tk 43 and take about 40 minutes. Rickshaws within Sonargaon cost Tk 200-250 for a full day hire.

Weather

Visit between October and March for comfortable weather. Summers can be very hot and humid. The rural setting offers little shade—bring water and sun protection.
