Before you go
Connectivity
Mobile network coverage is limited and unreliable in Sonamarg. BSNL has the best signal; other providers may have no service. No WiFi hotspots. Inform family before treks into remote areas.
Money
Cash is essential in Sonamarg—no ATMs in the immediate area. Carry sufficient rupees from Srinagar. Prices are quoted in ₹ and often negotiable for pony rides and services.
Packing
Bring warm layers, rain gear, and sturdy hiking shoes year-round. Gum boots and woollen gear can be rented locally. Sunscreen and sunglasses are essential at altitude.
Safety
Carry identity documents as security checkpoints exist on approach roads. Altitude sickness is a real risk above 3,500m. Do not swim in glacial lakes—the water is extremely cold and currents can be strong.
Transport
Shared jeeps from Srinagar's General Bus Stand are the most common transport. Private taxis can be hired for day trips. Pony rides are the primary local transport for glacier and trekking access.
Weather
Even summer days can be cold (10-15°C) with rapid temperature drops at altitude. Winters see heavy snow and road closures. Always check weather before treks.
