Why Go?
Sochi is Russia's largest summer seaside resort, attracting over 4 million visitors annually to its subtropical coastline with palms and shingle beaches. The city is often called the Black Sea Pearl or unofficial Summer Capital of Russia, offering warm sunny days from May to October and vibrant nightlife. In 2014 it hosted the Winter Olympics and in 2018 FIFA World Cup matches,留下了 Olympic venues and infrastructure. Only 3% of visitors are international tourists due to Russian visa requirements, making it relatively unspoiled by mass tourism.

Climate and When to Go
Sochi enjoys 300 sunny days annually, located in Russia's rare subtropical zone with high humidity similar to the US Gulf Coast states. The swimming season runs from mid-May through October with peak crowds in July-August; September-October ('velvet season' or бархатный сезон) offers warm sea, mild air, and fewer tourists. Winter brings rain to the coast but snow in the mountains, making February-March ideal for Krasnaya Polyana skiing. March-May features garden blossoms with short spring.

Getting In
Sochi International Airport (IATA: AER) in Adler district was rebuilt for the 2014 Olympics, with seasonal flight schedules peaking May-September and possible winter delays due to weather. Cruise ship and ferry passengers can enjoy visa-free entry for up to 72 hours; all other foreign visitors need standard Russian visas. Alternative airports include Krasnodar and Gelendzhik.

Getting Around
Sochi is a sprawling city stretching 145 km along the Black Sea coast, requiring transport between districts. Local buses and marshrutkas (shared taxis) serve most routes; taxis like New Yellow Taxi (nyt.ru), Taxi Sochi, and Taxi Kapriz operate throughout. Car rental is available at the airport from Hertz, Sixt, and local operators ATON/Rentacarov and Rossa Rent.

Where to Stay
Sochi has over 200 hotels but lacks mid-range chain options—luxury Soviet-era health resorts dominate alongside basic mini-hotels. Lazarevskoe district offers cheaper accommodation while Central Sochi and Adler are pricier; summer and early May holidays require advance booking. Hotels with reported better English include Victor Guesthouse near Dendrarium (Khosta), AKS Hotel, and modern Marins Park Hotel in the center.

Food and Drink
Sochi offers Russian cuisine, Italian restaurants like La Terrazza, German beer at Frau Marta near the seaport, and budget pizza at Art-Pizza and Mama Roza. Local specialties include Dagomys tea—the world's northernmost tea cultivated since 1887—with plantation tours and samovar tea parties. The city has lively bars including 24/7 London Bar beach club and Shum Karaoke on Navaginskaya street.

Things to Do
Sochi combines Olympic venues (Sochi Autodrom, mountain cluster at Krasnaya Polyana), cultural sites (Sochi Art Museum with 5,000+ items, History Museum with 150,000 pieces), and natural attractions. Mount Akhun offers panoramic city views; the nearby Yew & Boxtree Wood (UNESCO Biosphere Reserve) has 700 plant species including 2,000-year-old trees. Boat tours depart from Sochi seaport May-October; Riviera Park hosts concerts at the Green Theatre.

Stay Safe
Krasnodar Krai is among Southern Russia's safest regions, with Sochi showing no unusual crime rates. Standard precautions apply—avoid unlit areas at night and watch for pickpockets at markets and transport terminals. Beggars may approach at stations and beaches; fraud targets tourists at summer resorts. Tap water is certified safe throughout Sochi (first in Russia, 2011); use sunblock in summer.

Connectivity
Major Russian mobile operators (Beeline, Megafon, MTS, Tele2, Yota) provide coverage throughout Greater Sochi; Tele2 is cheapest but has smallest coverage. Free WiFi is available at McDonald's on Kurortny Prospekt, Sochi Airport (MegaFon), and hotel lobbies including Radisson Lazurnaya. Several internet cafes operate in central Sochi.

Go Next
Day trips from Sochi include the mountain resort of Krasnaya Polyana (skiing in winter, trekking in summer), the Vorontsovka Caves system in Khosta district with 11 km of passages, and the 33 waterfalls in Lazarevskoe district best seen in spring. Further afield, the wine region around Novorossiysk produces Russia's leading sparkling wines at Abrau Durso.

33 waterfalls
There are several waterfall locations in Greater Sochi area. This certain one is a bit remote, but contains as many as thirty three waterfalls, those are not so high (1.3 to 10 metres), but very scenic ones. They are best seen in spring, when rains and snow melting at mountains bring more water. Dzhegosh stream has only 2 km length flowing down to Shakhe river not far from a traditional Circassian settlement Bolshoy Kichmay, 11 km from the sea coast, Golovinka sub-district and regular public transportation. To get to waterfalls less cheaper, but more suitable is to use a taxi or to join an organized tour.
