Before you go
Accommodation
Budget options are scarce and prices higher than Lhasa. Book ahead during peak seasons. The Samdup Hotel area has the most restaurant choices.
Altitude
At 3,800 meters elevation, altitude sickness is a serious concern. Spend time acclimatizing in Lhasa (3,650m) before ascending to Shigatse.
Money
Chinese yuan (CNY) is the local currency. ATMs are limited; bring sufficient cash from Lhasa. Credit cards are rarely accepted outside larger hotels.
Transport
Train from Lhasa takes just under 3 hours with several daily departures. Airport is 45 km away with flights less frequent than ground transport. Local sites are walkable.
