Why Go?
Shaoxing is a historic water town with over 2,500 years of history, offering a slower pace than nearby Hangzhou or Shanghai. The city is famous for its traditional black-awning boats gliding along ancient canals, well-preserved Qing and Republic-era architecture, and its legendary yellow rice wine. It's the birthplace of renowned writer Lu Xun and home to calligrapher Wang Xizhi's sacred Orchid Pavilion site. The combination of Jiangnan water-town charm, literary heritage, and affordable prices makes it ideal for culture-seeking backpackers.
