Overview
Semonkong ("Place of Smoke" in Sesotho) is a tiny mountain hamlet that exists almost entirely because of the Maletsunyane Falls. The 192m waterfall is the highest single-drop in Southern Africa, and the surrounding basalt gorge creates a dramatic landscape few tourists see.

Before you go
Activities
Book abseiling and overnight pony treks through Semonkong Lodge in advance during peak season (May-September). Day treks can often be arranged on shorter notice.
Money
Lesotho Loti (LSL, also called Maloti, abbreviated M) is used. South African Rand is also accepted. ATMs are unlikely in Semonkong—bring sufficient cash from Maseru.
Transport
Shared taxis and buses connect Semonkong to Maseru, though schedules are irregular. The town is walkable; pony rides to the falls cost around M30.
Weather
The gorge below Maletsunyane Falls can have snow even in summer. Bring layers year-round—mountain temperatures drop significantly at night.
