Semarang combines a colonial old town with Chinese cultural landmarks. Its markets and traditional neighbourhoods contrast with the modern commercial city.
Languages: Indonesian
Why go?
Semarang is the capital of Central Java, a bustling mid-sized city of almost 1.7 million people. It is more an administrative and business town than a tourist destination, but offers contrasting modern mid-rises, significant Dutch colonial architecture, a vibrant Chinatown, and traditional 'kampung' neighborhoods. The city is a good base for exploring Central Java, with affordable street food and a rich cultural heritage.
