Understand
Salatiga was designated as a town in 1917 by the Dutch East Indies government. The Dutch settled here because of the cool climate and built luxurious houses along Diponegoro Street. The town hosts the annual Festival Mata Air, highlighting sustainable use of Central Java's water resources. Students from across Indonesia study at the university, giving the town a diverse and cosmopolitan feel.

When to Go

The annual Festival Mata Air celebrates Central Java's water resources with cultural events. Mountain conditions can change rapidly, so check weather before any volcano excursions.
