Overview
Selva el Ocote is one of Mexico's largest protected forest areas, spanning over 101,000 hectares in the Chiapas highlands. The reserve preserves mid and high elevation forest ecosystems with dramatic landscapes including the Cascada El Aguacero waterfall, the massive Sima de las Cotorras sinkhole where parrots nest in limestone walls, and caves with ancient petroglyphs.

Restaurant at Sima de las Cotorras may be closed; bring your own supplies. Nearest full dining options are in Tuxtla Gutiérrez.
Safety
Remote terrain requires careful preparation. Bring ample water, tell someone your plans, and hire a local guide for backcountry areas.
Transport
The park is accessed from Tuxtla Gutiérrez. Most park roads are unpaved and require 4WD. The road to Sima de las Cotorras is paved. Local guide recommended.
