Overview

SE Forest National Park protects 1,151.77 km² of Gondwana-era temperate wet rainforests—one of the last patches of continuous wilderness in New South Wales. Sandwiched between the Snowy Mountains and the Sapphire Coast, it offers remote mountain lookouts, fern-filled gullies, and walkable tracks without the crowds of Kosciuszko or Beowa.

Before you go

Connectivity

No mobile coverage in most of the park. Inform someone of your plans before entering. Satellite communicators recommended for extended hikes.

Safety

Remote park with limited facilities. No fuel, food, or emergency services inside the park. Nearest hospital is in Bega or Cooma. Roads can become impassable; carry recovery gear.

Transport

A 4WD or high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended. Snowy Mountains Highway (B72) is the only sealed road through the park. Expect gravel roads that may be impassable after rain.

Weather

Carry rain gear year-round; the temperate rainforest receives consistent precipitation. Mountain weather changes rapidly—check forecasts before entering remote areas.
