Why Go
São Bernardo do Campo is the most industrialized municipality in Brazil, famed as the birthplace of the CUT (Central Única dos Trabalhadores), Latin America's largest trade union. For backpackers, it offers a rare blend: access to Atlantic rainforest trails, the Billings reservoir for water sports, and proximity to the coast—it's the closest city in the São Paulo metropolitan area to the beach. The main district is urban and working-class, while the Riacho Grande district provides green escapes with preserved nature and the historic Caminhos do Mar walking route.

Getting In
Most travelers arrive via São Paulo and take intercity buses. Viação Cometa provides direct service from São Paulo to São Bernardo do Campo. To reach coastal destinations like Santos, Praia Grande, Guarujá, Bertioga, or São Vicente, take Rodovia Anchieta from the city center—45-50 minutes in good traffic. For other coastal cities, first travel to the Jabaquara intercity bus terminal in São Paulo, or return via Santos.

Getting Around
The main district is urban and requires vehicles or taxis for most travel. Within Riacho Grande district, the central village is walkable. The Billings reservoir crossing point on Rodovia Anchieta leads to Riacho Grande. Local bus service connects to Santos via Viação Cometa. The Caminhos do Mar route starts at the south of Riacho Grande and descends 8 km to Cubatão.

When to Go
The region can be visited year-round, but weekends offer more activities at Parque Municipal Estoril and the Billings reservoir. Sunny days provide the best views from the Caminhos do Mar route, where the sea is visible. Avoid holiday periods when Rodovia Anchieta becomes heavily congested heading to the coast.
