Overview
Melaque (officially San Patricio-Melaque and also encompassing Villa Obregón) is a quiet three-village conurbation on Banderas Bay, positioned between the resort hubs of Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo. With a population of about 7,500 permanent residents, it delivers a genuinely local Mexican beach town experience—no high-rises or all-inclusive sprawl—while still offering a well-developed main beach, good restaurants, and reasonable infrastructure for week-long stays.

Connectivity
WiFi is available at hotels and some restaurants. Mexican SIM cards (Telcel, AT&T, Movistar) provide coverage; buy at OXXO or carrier stores in town.
Language
Spanish is the primary language. Some English is spoken at hotels and popular restaurants like Cesar's y Charlie's, but not universally.
Money
Cash is king in Melaque—ATMs are limited and may run dry on weekends. Carry sufficient pesos for meals, taxis, and small purchases. USD is sometimes accepted at hotels but at poor exchange rates.
Safety
Melaque is generally safe for tourists. Standard precautions: avoid leaving valuables on the beach, be cautious at night in less-trafficked areas.
Transport
Buses connect Melaque to Manzanillo (1+ hour) and Puerto Vallarta (4 hours) frequently. Local collective taxis (peseros) serve Barra de Navidad and Cuastecomates.
Weather
Best visited November-April for dry, warm weather. March hosts the major Día de San Patricio festival. July-September sees tropical rains but lower prices.
