Overview
Salgótarján is the county seat and largest city in Nógrád county, Hungary. Once a small mining town, the city was built in a very modern communist style, leaving much to be desired in terms of classical architecture.

Activities
The underground Mining Museum offers access to actual mine sections. The Karancs-Medves Landscape Protection Area has marked hiking trails with basalt formations.
Transport
The downtown is compact and walkable. Bus #11A serves Somoskő castle, #11B serves Salgóbánya ruins, both once hourly. Taxis require advance booking.
