Overview
Russell is a charming historic township at the heart of the Bay of Islands, reachable by a short passenger ferry from Paihia. Once the lawless trading port of Kororāreka, where whalers, merchants, and escaped Australian convicts mixed in the early 1800s, today it offers elegant waterfront dining along The Strand, historic buildings including the country's oldest licensed hotel, and access to scenic Long Beach.
