Overview

Rishiri Island is a remote volcanic outpost at Japan's northern frontier, dominated by the 1721m Mount Rishiri which can be seen from over 100 km away. The island offers spectacular hiking for all skill levels, native wildflower meadows, and world-class uni-don (sea-urchin rice bowls) at a fraction of Tokyo prices.

Before you go

Food

Uni-don (sea-urchin rice bowls) at ¥1000-2000 is the local specialty, found near the Oshidomari ferry terminal.

Hiking

Mount Rishiri hike takes 8-10 hours round-trip. Start early (before 09:00), carry 3+ liters of water, and turn back in bad weather.

Language

English signage is limited. Hiking maps available in English from Wakkanai station and ferry terminals.

Money

Japan is cash-oriented. Carry sufficient yen as card acceptance is limited on this remote island.

Transport

Ferry from Wakkanai takes about 2 hours. About 5 services daily in summer, reduced in winter. Second class ¥2200, seating on tatami mats.

Weather

Summer (June-September) is the only reliable season. Heavy snow closes most services in winter. Bring layers even in summer.
