Overview
Rincán de la Vieja Volcano National Park covers 14,161 hectares of dry tropical forest straddling Guanacaste and Alajuela provinces. The park is famous for intense geothermal activity—fumaroles, boiling mud pots, vapor vents, and sulfur springs—alongside seven large waterfalls including the 25-meter Oropéndola Falls.

Park entrance fee is US$10 per person. Open Tuesday through Sunday, 07:00–15:00. Closed Mondays.
Safety
Stay on marked trails near volcanic features. The gravel access road has sharp edges that can damage tires. Waterfall jumping is seasonal—check conditions before entering the riverbed.
Transport
Accessible only by car from Liberia. A 4WD vehicle is advisable during wet season (May-November). The gravel road has sharp edges—bring a spare tire and jack.
Weather
The dry season (December–April) offers easier road conditions and clearer trails. Wet season brings lush vegetation but muddy paths and recommended 4WD.
