Overview
Rila is a small mountain town whose sole claim to fame is being the gateway to Rila Monastery, the largest and most important Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria. Founded in the 10th century, the monastery receives over one million visitors annually and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.

Rila Monastery is open Monday-Thursday 6:30-18:00 and Friday-Sunday 6:30-18:30.

Bulgaria uses the Bulgarian Lev (BGN). ATMs may be limited in the small town, so withdraw cash in Sofia before visiting.
Transport
Tour buses from Sofia are the most convenient option. Rila Monastery Bus operates daily round-trips.
