Overview

Rietvlei Nature Reserve is a compact 38 km² wildlife reserve in Gauteng Province, offering a convenient escape from Pretoria for day visitors. The reserve features 40 km of roads (30 km tarred, 10 km dirt) for self-drive game viewing, with Rhino, zebra, and antelope regularly spotted.

Before you go

Money

Entrance is R55 adults, R30 children 6-16. Cash likely required at gate. Nearby Irene Village Mall has ATMs.

Packing

Bring binoculars for wildlife viewing, especially for bird watching. Sunscreen and rain gear recommended for summer.

Safety

Stay in vehicle on game drives; only exit at designated areas. No swimming in dams due to hippos and crocodiles.

Transport

Self-drive is required; the reserve is located off the R21 between Pretoria and OR Tambo Airport. Speed limit is 30 km/h.

Weather

Summer has hot days (to 30°C) with afternoon thunderstorms. Winters are mild and dry (5-20°C).
