Overview
Johannesburg is Africa's largest city and the continent's economic hub, offering a raw urban energy unlike Cape Town's scenic beauty or Durban's beach culture. The city has shaken off its 1990s crime capital reputation, now driven by youthful exuberance, a growing black middle class, and the omnipresent soundtrack of Amapiano and house music.

Why Go
Johannesburg is Africa's largest city and the continent's economic hub, offering a raw urban energy unlike Cape Town's scenic beauty or Durban's beach culture. The city has shaken off its 1990s crime capital reputation, now driven by youthful exuberance, a growing black middle class, and the omnipresent soundtrack of Amapiano and house music. With historic neighborhoods like Soweto, distinct street entrepreneurship at traffic lights, and around 6 million trees creating the world's largest man-made urban forest, Jo'burg rewards travelers who look beyond surface impressions.

Get In
O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) is Africa's busiest airport and the main gateway, serving as a connecting hub for flights to Southern Africa with many connections from international hubs including London. Most European flights arrive overnight in early morning, so be prepared for long immigration queues. Lanseria International Airport northwest of the city caters to regional, corporate, and diplomatic traffic with fewer airlines. Johannesburg Park Station is the central rail hub, though the surrounding areas may be unsafe; organize onward transport before arrival.

Get Around
Johannesburg was built for cars, so public transport is still developing. The Gautrain is a fast, clean, and safe option connecting the airport, Marlboro, Midrand, Rosebank, Pretoria, and Centurion. Metrobus routes along Oxford Street through Gandhi Square, Killarney, Rosebank, Illovo, Sandton, Rivonia, and Sunninghill (routes 5C and 5D) are easy to use. Orange PUTCO buses run more regularly but halt completely on weekends and public holidays. Gautrain feeder buses serve extensive routes from each station but also don't run on weekends. Minibus taxis should be avoided unless accompanied by locals as routes are confusing and vehicles are frequently not roadworthy. Car rental offers best flexibility but expect heavy traffic into Sandton (06:30-09:00) and out (15:30-18:30) adding up to 2 hours to journeys.

When to Go
Summer (December-February) brings temperatures reaching mid-30s Celsius with little wind and spectacular afternoon thunderstorms. Winter temperatures can drop below freezing but snow is extremely rare. The city sits at 1750 metres altitude, so newcomers may easily get out of breath. The weather is generally regarded as excellent year-round.

Where to Stay
Sandton and the northern suburbs offer the widest range of accommodation options. For proximity to O.R. Tambo International Airport, consider Kempton Park or Benoni areas. Budget travelers should look at Melville for its student-friendly bars and affordable eateries, or explore accommodation near the Gautrain stations for easy transit access.

Food and Drink
Johannesburg has diverse dining with 'restaurant streets' offering a more European experience than standard mall restaurants. Key restaurant streets include 7th Street in Melville (student-focused with street vendors and charity shops), Gleneagles Road in Greenside (cafes and restaurants away from tourists), Grant Avenue in Norwood (sushi, pizza, pasta, and Sharwarma for South African-flavored Lebanese food), and 4th Avenue in Parkhurst (safe walking, handful of restaurants). The CBD near Market Theatre has cheaper options than northern suburbs. Fordsburg offers authentic Indian cuisine near Oriental Plaza and hosts the few outdoor street markets with nighttime pedestrian traffic. Derrick Avenue in Cyrildene is local Chinatown with excellent Asian restaurants. South African cuisine features many varieties of sauces—ask for it on the side if you prefer less.

Things to Do
Soweto is a world-renowned destination; use GPS set to Vilakazi Street where road infrastructure and signs are excellent, stop at Maponya Mall for retail and movies, and consider an official township tour rather than exploring independently. Gold Reef City in South Johannesburg combines an amusement park and casino with gold mining history and underground mine tours. Cricket fans can attend international matches at Wanderers Stadium in Illovo near Sandton. Golf enthusiasts should book Glendower in Edenvale, which often hosts the South African Open. The Carlton Centre at 222m is Africa's tallest building, while Hillbrow (270m) and Sentech (234m) towers are taller structures.

Stay Safe
Johannesburg has stubbornly high crime levels; armed security guards are a common sight. General advice: look like a local, avoid displaying wealth, keep cellphones hidden, leave jewelry at the hotel, and avoid carrying backpacks, daypacks, cameras, or purses. Use a cheap plastic bag and carry only the money you need. If robbed, cooperate fully, do not resist as assailants may be armed, and report to police immediately. Do not follow strangers, do not pay for something before receiving goods, and politely decline beggars. Most crime victims are local township residents; the overwhelming majority of visitors have trouble-free stays.

Budget
As Africa's economic hub, Johannesburg has accommodation options across all budgets from hostels to luxury hotels. Street food and vendor meals offer the cheapest eats, while restaurant streets like Melville and Parkhurst provide mid-range dining. Gautrain fares vary by distance but represent good value for speed and safety. Car rental is widely available from budget options like Rent a Wreck to standard agencies. Craft markets and beadwork sold at intersections make for affordable souvenirs.
