Overview
Rason (formally Rajin-Sŏnbong) is North Korea's only visa-free zone and special economic area, sitting at the northeastern corner where China and Russia meet. With a population of approximately 195,000, this combined city of the former Rajin and Sonbong receives only a small percentage of the nation's Western tourism.

Before you go
Culture
Rason is a special economic zone with more market-oriented activity than elsewhere in DPRK. Chinese influence is significant given the proximity and trade relationships.
Money
One of only two places in North Korea where foreigners can legally obtain and spend North Korean won. Currency exchange at 'real' rates rather than official rates is possible. Golden Triangle Bank debit cards work only within Rason.
Transport
Rajin Station and Sonbong Station are the main railway hubs. Entry through checkpoints acts like an international border within North Korea.
