Overview
Qomolangma (Tibetan for 'Goddess Mother of Snows') offers a different perspective on the world's highest peak from Tibet's North Face—clear, sweeping views inaccessible from the crowded Nepalese side. The reserve encompasses glaciers, the highest monastery on Earth at Rongbuk, and tent hotels at 5,200 m base camp.

Before you go
Connectivity
Mobile coverage is nonexistent in most of the reserve. Satellite communication devices (PLBs or satellite messengers) are essential for emergency contact.
Culture
Rongbuk Monastery offers genuine Buddhist cultural experiences—respect photography restrictions and accept butter tea when offered as a courtesy.
Health
Acclimatization is critical: spend 2-3 nights at 3,000-4,000 m before ascending to 5,200 m. Altitude sickness kills; symptoms require immediate descent.
Money
China uses CNY (Renminbi). ATMs are unavailable in the reserve—carry sufficient cash from Lhasa. Credit cards are useless in this remote region.
Packing
Bring layers for extreme temperature swings, strong sunscreen (50+), sunglasses with UV protection, and medication for altitude symptoms (Diamox).
Transport
No public transport reaches the reserve. All access requires pre-arranged 4WD transport through licensed tour operators in Lhasa or Shigatse.
