Before you go

Accommodation

Book accommodations well in advance for June-August weekends. The Petrovskoe mansion guesthouse and Arina R. hotel offer the best combination of location and amenities. Budget options like Druzhba provide basic Soviet-era rooms at low prices. Camping is not recommended due to insect pressure and lack of designated sites.

Language

English signage is minimal to nonexistent. Even the most tourist-oriented hotels have limited English-speaking staff. Arrange translation assistance through a Moscow or St. Petersburg tour operator if you don't read Cyrillic. Download offline Russian language packs for translation apps before visiting.

Money

Most establishments accept Russian rubles only; euros may be accepted at upscale hotels like Arina R. but expect unfavorable exchange rates. ATMs are scarce in the area—withdraw cash in St. Petersburg or Pskov before arriving. Credit cards work at major hotel receptions but not at museums or local cafes.

Transport

Public transport options are extremely limited. A car is nearly essential for visiting the spread-out estate villages. If arriving by train to Dno station, pre-arrange pickup with your hotel or budget for a taxi (approximately 500-800 RUB). Marshrutkas (shared minibuses) run occasionally but on irregular schedules.

Weather

Summer temperatures range 15-25°C with long daylight hours; pack layers for cool evenings. Winter brings heavy snow and temperatures dropping to -15°C or below, making estate visits picturesque but requiring proper cold-weather gear. The best balance of accessibility and atmosphere occurs in late June and September.
