Port Chalmers is a compact historic port town on the Otago Harbour, serving as the main cargo and cruise ship terminal for Dunedin. Free WiFi is available in the port terminal building and on George Street. Mobile coverage is generally good with 4G service.

Fish and chips at Port Fish Supply is the local cheap eat. Cafes on George St serve breakfast, baking and coffee from around $8-15.
Language
English is the primary language. Māori names are used for local features: Kamau Taurua for Quarantine Island, Rakiri for Goat Island.

New Zealand Dollar (NZD) is the local currency. ATMs available at New World Supermarket and the pharmacy. Most shops accept credit cards.
Safety
Logging trucks use the main street regularly. Avoid kayaking in the commercial port area when ships are present.
Transport
The Port to Port ferry connects Port Chalmers with Portobello ($12 adults, $6 children, 10-15 minute crossing) from Back Beach with departures at 9:30AM, 12:55PM and 3:30PM.
