Overview
Polatlı is primarily significant for two reasons: the 1921 Battle of the Sakarya, which halted the Greek advance on Ankara and determined Turkey's modern borders, and the nearby ancient city of Gordion, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023. The town itself is agricultural and functional rather than picturesque, but the battle memorials scattered across the countryside are powerful and moving.
